Teeners place second at Mt. Vernon Tourney
• The Groton Teener team placed second at the Joe Hull Memorial VFW Baseball Tournament held July 7 and 9 in Mt. Vernon. • Groton defeated Dakota Valley in the first game, 9-2. Drew Planteen was the winning pitcher, throwing 110 pitches for eight strike-outs, five walks, four hits and two runs. Kasey Kurtz was the catcher. • Parker Rossow was three for four at bat with three runs scored. Mason Madsen was three for four at bat with one run scored with one hit being a triple. Spencer Knecht was two for three at bat with three runs scored and one of his hits was a double. Adding one hit each were Planteen, Kurtz, Alec Oleson, Wyatt Larson and Jeric Albrecht. • Groton then defeated Platte, 6-3. Madsen was the winning pitcher, throwing 30 pitches in three and two-thirds inning with three strike-outs. Knecht was the starting pitcher, throwing 76 pitches in three and one-thirds inning, having seven strike-outs, three walks, two hits and three runs. • The game was tied at three after five innings. In the bottom of the sixth, Groton scored three runs and held Platte to a one-two-three inning in the top of the seventh. • Kurtz and Knecht each had a double and a single, Rossow had a double and Planteen, Larson and Doeden each had a single. Kurtz was the catcher. • Groton lost the title game to Humboldt, 3-2. Humboldt scored in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead. In the top of the seventh, Madsen started off with a double, but ended up being stranded at third. Rossow pitched the game, throwing 91 pitches for seven strike-outs, three walks, four hits and three runs. Kurtz was the catcher. • Madsen had a double and a single, Planteen and Knecht each had a double and Kurtz, Alec Voss and Albrecht each had a single.
