South Dakota's six public universities have higher grade-point averages than non-athletes but lagged in some proficiency tests, according to a report that will be presented to the Board of Regents next week. • The study for the 2010-2011 school year involved 644 athletes and 7,250 non-athletes who entered the university system as freshmen or transfer students. It will be presented to the regents during a meeting next week at South Dakota State University. • The report found that athletes had an average GPA of 2.73 and took 13.2 hours, well above the average GPA of 2.47 and 12.1 hours for non-athletes. • The NCAA requires that athletes show progress toward degree completion to maintain eligibility, said Daniel Palmer, director of Institutional Research for the Board of Regents. • "Athletes face standards that non-athletes don't," he said. • Non-athletes outscored athletes in science, reading and writing on the College (Continued on page 28)
